What should you get from personal training?

A hard session can leave you tired without telling you whether your training is moving you forward. When you pay for personal training, you should understand what you are working towards and how each session contributes.

A programme with a purpose

Your goal and starting point should shape the programme. If you want to build muscle, the exercise choices, amount of training and progression need to support that. If you are new to the gym, learning the movements and building a repeatable routine may be the first priorities.

You should also know what to do between coached sessions. One session with a trainer needs to make sense within the rest of your week.

Feedback you can use

Coaching should help you recognise what a useful repetition looks and feels like. That includes setting up the exercise, using an appropriate range of motion and understanding the effort required.

For example, recording eight repetitions on a machine is more useful when the setup and execution are consistent. If the seat position, movement and technique change each time, comparing sessions becomes harder.

A way to see progress

Keep a record of the exercises, loads and repetitions. Review performance over time alongside the physique measures relevant to your goal. Improvement might mean more repetitions with the same technique, a better movement you can repeat, or greater confidence training independently.

A difficult week does not always mean the programme has failed. It gives us something to investigate: attendance, effort, recovery and whether the plan still fits.

Clear expectations before you start

Ask what is included beyond the session: programming, nutrition guidance, feedback and progress reviews. Compare the whole service and the support you need, rather than relying on a generic local hourly rate.
